Health, safety, and the environment (HSE)

The Natural History Museum aims to be an organization built on trust and professional pride. We offer a working environment where well-being, mutual respect, health and safety and job satisfaction are safeguarded. NHM shall ensure a good physical and psychosocial working environment for employees, create good work routines, and encourage good dialogue in our everyday working life. Work at NHM shall be characterized by openness, knowledge sharing and respect. NHM is committed to developing a professional working environment with emphasis on social interaction to produce high-quality professional results. NHM shall have a conscious ethical stance in relation to the external environment.

Roles and responsibilities in HSE work

  • The responsibility for HSE and compliance with the Working Environment Act lies with the employer.
    At NHM, the Museum Director has the highest responsibility.
  • The HSE coordinator has no responsibility, but supports the management and is responsible for coordinating the overall progress.
  • Section managers are responsible for HSE in their departments.
  • Employees shall participate in HSE management.
  • Safety representatives shall ensure that the HSE management is performed properly.
  • The Working Environment Committee shall ensure implementation of a functional, protective working environment.

Working environment committee

The Local Working Environment Committee (LAMU) is a representative committee that meets 4-5 times a year and addresses matters relating to the safety, health and welfare of the staff at NHM. Minutes are published after each meeting and are available to everyone at NHM.

Safety representatives

Safety representatives shall safeguard the interests of staff in matters relating to the working environment and ensure that the Working Environment Act is observed.

Emergency preparedness

NHM has an emergency preparedness plan that describes the actions and responsibilities in the case of incidents which require crisis management

KKOA

NHM is a member of the crisis resource collaboration for cultural institutions in Oslo and Akershus (KKOA), which aims to jointly improve preparedness and prevent and handle crisis incidents in museums, archives and display and conservation institutions for art and culture.

The Security Committee

The Museum of Natural History, the Museum of Cultural History and UiO cooperate in the Security Committee on the work to ensure that there are updated plans, rules and routines for security and preparedness, and that outlined measures are followed up at the museums.
