DNA barcoding at NHM

Norwegian Barcode of Life (NorBOL)

DNA barcoding is genetic species identification using a short, standardised DNA fragment, which is compared to a reference library of species-specific sequences.

Natural History Museum (NHM) aids in building the international reference library of DNA barcodes, Barcode of Life Data System (BOLD), through our membership in Norwegian Barcode of Life (NorBOL) and engagement in Biodiversity Genomics Europe (BGE).

Within NorBOL, NHM is responsible for coordinating DNA barcoding of basidiomycetes, lichens, terrestrial insects and non-marine vertebrates. Lists of barcoded Norwegian species of fungi, lichens, butterflies, mammals, amphibians and reptiles can be found here.
