By profession, Axel Conradin Ullmann was a schoolteacher. For 23 years he was the head of the middleschool in Kragerø and from 1896 to 1913 a senior teacher at the Kristiansand Cathedral School.

As entomologist, Ullmann was mostly interested in Coleoptera. Particularly, he studied the fauna of Kragerø and Kristiansand. His collection included about 9,000 specimens representing 2,500 species. Originally it was deposited in the Kristiansand museum (now Agder naturmuseum), but subsequently transferred to our museum. Ullmann's duplicate collection is deposited in Agder museum.
