Purpose

Get a brief introduction to cartography and how cartography may help you to point out important issues. How to make nice/powerful/useful map illustrations? May some of the principles in cartography be useful when making tables and diagrams? Can the default diagrams in Excel be improved?

Arrangement

Presentation followed by how to make map illustrations in QGIS. You’ll benefit from working on a computer, but please feel free to work 2 participants on one lap top. We practice learning by doing, but learning by listening may work as well.

We will use QGIS 2.18.13 (ver. 2.16.3 or newer will do) to create the map illustrations.

Download QGIS from www.qgis.org.

In addition, we'll need a text editor and a screen capture tool.

Good open source software alternatives are https://notepad-plus-plus.org/ and http://getgreenshot.org/ respectively.

Register for QGIS II to a.b.nilsen@nhm.uio.no by Monday 6 November.
