Regional training course for M.Sc. and Ph.D. students with expert trainers and trainers-in-training - in Belarus (5 days). Data publishing course in Belarus, 11-15 November 2019.
Successful attendees will be issued a certificate of attendance corresponding to 2 ECTS and a digital GBIF Certified Trainer badge. This training model has been tested in the Biodiversity Information for Development (BID) programme and is adapted to BioDATA needs. The course is designed for 16-20 participants. All applicants must submit a motivation letter as part of their registration. Lectures will be partly in English and partly in Russian with all the materials available in both languages.
Eligibility for BioDATA students is limited to the partner countries in the BioDATA project: Belarus, Ukraine, Armenia, and Tajikistan - with a focus on Belarus for this particular course. Travel, meals, and accommodation will be covered for accepted participants in this course. Please note that all participants must have valid travel insurance that covers medical expenses.

Preparatory pre-course activities (October 2019)
Preparatory pre-course activities and assignments will be launched on Monday 28 October 2019. All participants will get login instructions for the e-learning platform that we will use during the BioDATA course. You will also find a copy of all the preparatory materials here: module 1, module 2.
Onsite course (11 to 15 November 2019)
Monday 11 November: Training course starts. Introduction, terminology, data standards, and planning for data publication workflows. [Module 3, Module 4, Module 5]
Tuesday 12 November: Data capture and digitization. Data quality principles and data cleaning tools and procedures, including OpenRefine. [Module 6, Module 7, Use Case 1]
Wednesday 13 November: Field trip with iNaturalist. Data descriptor publications, dataset metadata, data papers, and FAIR data guidelines.
Thursday 14 November: Data publication with the GBIF IPT (integrated data publishing toolkit).
Friday 15 November: Hands-on practice (with Use Case 2). The closing of the training event in the afternoon. [Use Case 2, Module 9]

Registration
The deadline for registration was 1 October.
Students were selected on the basis of a brief motivation letter describing their background and interest in the course topic of open biodiversity data publication.
Venue and travel information
The venue for the training course is Hotel Kamenyuki near Bialowieza Forest.
International travel is booked by the BioDATA secretariat at the Natural History Museum in Oslo. A bus will take all participants to the venue on Sunday 10 November at 12:00, leaving from Hotel Minsk.
Accommodation and meals during the course are covered for all accepted participants. Check-in at the hotel is on Sunday 10 November and check-out is on Friday 15 November.
Please note that all participants must have valid travel insurance that covers medical expenses.
