Natural History Library

The Natural History Library is part of the The Science Library at the University of Oslo, and is the first special library made for young kids.

Who can use the library?

  • The library is open to all museum visitors.
  • School classes and kindergarten groups must pre-book their visit to the museum in the same way as other visitors.
  • Children below 6 years of age cannot be alone in the library.
  • Children from 4th grade and up can visit the library unaccompanied.

What books are in the library?

A large collection of books about animals, plants, the sea, dinosaurs, rocks, minerals, meteorites, space, earth, weather, science, biology, evolution, the body, climate, gardens, travel and more. Most of the books are for children and young people, but we also have a large collection of popular science books aimed at a more mature audience.

Borrowing books

It requires that you register as a borrower and get a library card.

Opening hours

The library has the same opening hours as the museum

What activities are available?

  • We have Lego and Duplo, puzzles, beads, animal and dinosaur figures and fossils and rocks that you can touch.
  • We regularly hold events in the library that are open to the museum's visitors.

Eating your own food

We have several tables and a small kitchenette in the library that can be used to eat food you have brought, and heat up baby food. Visiting school and kindergarten groups can use these facilities by agreement. We want all eating to take place at the tables.
