The value of DNA information of scientific collection specimens in ichthyology

This seminar will be given by Dr Nicolas Straube from the University of Bergen. Dr Straube will be visiting in person.

Abstract

In this presentation, I would like to give two examples from ichthyology where DNA sequence information from scientific collection specimens helps clarify complex taxonomic cases and can assist in evaluating species for conservation and management measures. The first example will deal with the phylogenetic placement of a Lantern shark species known only from its type material and surprising results which will be helpful for the future evaluation of the species. The second example will focus on the reconstruction of the history of a potentially extinct species in Lake Constance where results from our study suggest a re-evaluation of the species on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species.

About Dr Nicolas Straube

Nico is an associate professor and curator of ichthyology at the University of Bergen. Nico uses morphological and phylogenetic methods to decipher the systematics and phylogeny of deep-sea sharks. His research makes use of archival specimens in museum collections. For example, sequencing of preserved material. He explores adaptation, diversity, phylogeography and population structures in present and past.
