The book chapter discusses societal benefits of and technological developments in citizen science. Data quality and ethical considerations are also discussed, as well as recommendations for communication with and involvement of participants. A handful of successful citizen science projects are also provided, including the GEco project Natur i endring in which citizens contribute to documenting treeline dynamics by mapping treeline locations in Norway.

So next time you are in the mountains: download the free mobile app, map some treelines, and make your contributions to science!
