How fast does the Speciation Clock tick?
Vis sammendrag
Species are the most fundamental unit in nature, yet we know surprisingly little about how long it takes for new, reproductively isolated species to originate and what factors influence the rate of speciation. Speciation depends on the evolution of reproductive barriers that make individuals reproductively isolated from one another. One potential factor that could impact how fast these reproductive barriers occur is mating system. It has been suggested that self-fertilization, a common mating system both in wild and cultivated plants and also found in animals, can drive the evolution of postzygotic reproductive isolation, and thus create new species.
Our aim is to test whether selfing species diverge into new species faster than outcrossing species. We will therefore test the rate at which reproductive barriers occur within species with different mating systems, we will target one selfing and one outcrossing plant species and identify the number of loci responsible for reproductive isolation between populations representing different degrees of population divergence.
For this project we will use two plant species, the selfer Draba nivalis and the outcrosser Arabidopsis lyrata and perform quantitative trait locus (QTL) mapping experiments aimed at identifying the number of loci responsible for reproductive isolation between populations representing different degrees of population divergence. For this we need to create intraspecific crosses and produce large F2 populations for genotyping and phenotyping. We will then test the ‘snowball effect’ in both species and compare the rate of accumulation of genes that contribute to reproductive isolation.
