Why study at the museum?
At the museum, scientific collections-based research is at the core of our mission. Our students and PhD candidates have access to a wide range of specimens, and often play an active role in expanding our collections through fieldwork. They are mentored by leading scientists and actively engage in museum-related activities. This blend of academic study and practical work creates an invaluable learning experience.
Being part of the University of Oslo, our students and PhD candidates benefit from both the museum and the University of Oslo's infrastructure. We are located in the beautiful Botanical Garden at Tøyen, a vast living scientific collection of plant diversity, and also an oasis in the middle of a thriving city. We also have premises at Økern with large storage facilities holding objects from the museum's collections.
Our research
Research schools
We are involved in two national research schools supplementing existing doctoral degree programmes across Norway. The research schools offer courses and activities aimed at PhD and Master's students.
Learning environment
We are committed to fostering an inclusive and supportive culture which promotes equality and values diversity. We welcome students from all backgrounds.
Students at the museum shall experience a working, learning and social environment in which the rights and dignity of all students are respected. The museum maintains a zero-tolerance policy towards bullying and harassment, accompanied by an effective reporting system to address any undesirable incidents.
Student Activity Committee
The museum has its own Student Activity Committee, a student-driven committee that organizes social events for PhD candidates, master's students, and postdocs at the museum.
